Consumption

The project I am choosing to do is the picture skirt because every time I try to think of what i consume the most my friends/family/and boyfriend keep coming to mind. I'm going to use pictures of me and my friend that we have taken when we have just been having fun and then there will also be pictures that i have "professionally" taken of them! I am planning on pasting them on a piece of long paper to wrap around me or punch holes in all the pictures are weave them all together.

Class notes

This week in class we talked about artist Kinkaid and Becroft. Both of these artist are very talented. My favorite part of class this week was going to the Mccoll center. All of the artists works were absolutely amazing. I was really blown away by what I saw. My favorite was Anthony Schrag who liked doing performance art. I liked him the best because it was something different and funny at the same time. Jonathan Brilliant was also amazing. His stick project was so fascinating. I really want to go back to the Mccoll center at the end of the semester to see how they will progress.

Thomas Kinkaid and Vanessa Becroft

Thomas Kinkaid

Before:
-What kind of media does he use?
-What inspires him to do these works?
-What kind of background does he come from?

After:
-Does he plan on trying to have everyone in America have one of his artworks in their household?
-Did he ever fail at first with his artwork? Or did people always love them?
-How long do his paintings take to complete?

I liked Kinkaid a lot. I feel like his works are able to please anyone, which is a great quality to have in an artwork. The only bad thing is that it is so overused by the people today and I believe that is our fault because we want it on items such as cups, mugs, blankets, etc. But, I think Kinkaid is doing a great job at getting the message he wants across to people.

Vanessa Becroft

Before:
-Why are women standing half naked in this picture?
-What is she trying to portray with this media?
-What was her inspiration to become an artist?

After:
-Why did she never use herself as one of the models?
-Why doesn't she use other medias besides installation to portray this meaning?
-Did she overcome anorexia with these installations?

Vanessa Becroft kind of confuses me. She wants to portray the image of beauty and self, but she isn't one of the models. She says she could be, but chooses not to. All of the models she chooses have plastic surgery and are enhanced by the light surrounding them. They are made to be beautiful and I think this is wrong. True beauty is natural and should not take any enhancements.

Consumption Brainstorming

Some things that I consume or that consume me are:

water, oatmeal, apples, electricity, phone battery, hairspray, toothpaste, toothbrush, energy, tv, computer, facebook, time, lead, ink, sleep, running, exercise, lotion, friends, cheerleading, photography, nature, nail polish, gas, car, cigarettes, music, beer, hair, clothes, art, ink, paper, dr. pepper, bread, ice, sausages, eggs, bagels, cereal, family, boyfriend, pool, tanning, bikes, hair ties, sandals, homework, cell phone, headphones, tv shows, bookbag, books, charcoal, mexican food, retainer, sheets, bed, blankets, pillow, desk, sink, refrigerator, oven, stove, spoons, knives, forks, toilet paper, nails, shampoo, fast food, soap, razors, fries.

There are many more things that I will add on at some point. I have three ideas that keep coming back. One is making a picture skirt. I would attach pictures of friends and family. They are people who consume most of my time and photography is one things that consumes my time as well.

My second idea is getting cigarette buts and somehow making them all connect and make a necklace because cigarettes control a lot of my life. At the bottom of the necklace I would make a big circle with a slash in it symbolizing that I am trying to quit.

My last idea would be using on of my friends and writing facebook stuff all over them (such as the facebook symbol, comments, status quotes, relationship status, how your feeling, etc.) and photographing them with just a bathing suit on to symbolize that facebook consumes so much of a persons life. The bathing suit shows that people put so much of themselves out on facebook that their is barely anything else left to share. I know that facebook consumes a lot of my life as well.

Identity Project

This is my identity project. I was really nervous about this because I have never taken a drawing class or any art classes. Photography is one of my major skills, but I tried to go outside my own box and try something different. I used bristol paper, charcoal, colored pencils, and sand paper as the background.

This project explains my ear surgeries. It is me with a gas mask on. It was a rough time in my life when I was scared. The purpose of the sand paper is to show how rocky that time was. It is 3-d because it stood out in my life.

During class while everyone was present was a great experience. It let us look into everyones life and get to know everyone in a different way. I think it definitely brought our whole class together. I think the identity project was a great first project for us.

Jennifer E. Price Extra Credit

Jennifer Price is a fine arts printmaker from UK. In her presentation she organized it with questions she always ask herself. She said that she is constantly questioning herself as an artist.

The first question was should art perform a duty? The answer to that was yes. Artwork can be used as propaganda, art can can create or display culture, and it can show hatred or love in christ.

The second question she had was what is my artwork about? She was a huge drinker while in college and one night she was hospitalized and found out that she had multiple personality disorder. Her artworks focus is inkblots. This is when you put ink on one object and place a sheet or some sort of cloth on the object and the pull it off and the inkblots appear. She said that her multiple personality disorder has a lot to do with her inkblots she does because people can make up what they want to see in her image and that the object she uses almost has "two personalities." There is the object itself and then what it looks like when the sheet is peeled off.

Her third question was can obstacles be overcame? She said yes because she has overcome many obstacles her self. Some obstacles she overcame were she was broke in college, she wasn't discover how she wanted to be, was homeless and sold artwork in markets, was attacked and insulted by some one she thought was her friend, and got in a major car accident. She said that the last thing she thought to herself before she died was "I can't die yet. I haven't done anything to be remembered for."

This is when she turned things around and became a bigger artist. Her last question was am I an artist? Her answer was "Yes, I am because I say so."

I thought she was very inspirational and gave people a reason not to give up on their dream. I would definitely go to one of her galleries.

Gallery

This week in class we only had one class and we went to The Light Factory. It was so great seeing two galleries. The artist that stood out to me the most was Robert and Shana Parkeharrison. Their pictures were so strange out different from all the rest. The way they had things growing out of arms was just incredible. I don't think i will ever forget this gallery.

Identity Project Notes

So far on my project I am still kind of stuck on what to draw. I have two ideas that i cannot choose. One is that I will draw something about all of my ear surgeries I have had throughout my life. Those experiences were very scary and almost unknown because I would remember going into the surgical room and them putting a gas mask on me and two seconds later you wake up in a different room. Its very odd. So one idea is a picture of a gas mask with two huge nervous eyes behind it. I would use charcoal or pencil.

My second idea is about my transition to college. I was very lonely, scared, homesick, but at the same time excited. One idea is have a bird flying out of a nest. The reason I have this because it is me leaving my home. I feel like this could be something that has been done before so idk which one i will chose
